The Nassau County Department of Health has issued an alert after a potential measles exposure at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The exposure occurred in the Emergency Department waiting room and treatment area on Wednesday and Thursday. The infected individual was at the medical center from 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
This marks the first confirmed measles case in Nassau County since 2019 and the third case in the state this year. The patient in question is a child under 5 years old who was hospitalized in stable condition. The medical center is now working closely with health officials to identify and contact individuals who may have been exposed.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, especially for the unvaccinated, and can be more serious for children under 5 years old. Symptoms of measles include fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis, and runny nose. Individuals who may have been exposed and experience these symptoms are advised to contact their healthcare provider before seeking care.
The Department of Health urges anyone who believes they may have been in the same area as the infected individual at the medical center to monitor their health closely. It is important to take precautions to prevent the spread of measles, including staying home if you are sick, washing your hands frequently, and ensuring you and your family are up to date on vaccinations.
As the situation unfolds, the Nassau County Department of Health will continue to provide updates and information to the public. It is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to protect themselves and others from measles.
