Ukraine’s Air Force Intercepts Russian Missiles Targeting Kyiv, 17 Injured
In a dramatic escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine’s air force intercepted 31 missiles launched by Russia at the capital city of Kyiv overnight. The largest Russian attack in weeks resulted in 17 people, including a child, being injured by falling debris, with four individuals currently in hospital receiving treatment for their injuries.
The attack on Kyiv followed Russia’s vow for revenge over Ukraine’s recent attacks on border regions. President Zelensky has renewed his call for more military aid from Western allies to help defend Ukraine against Russian aggression. Explosions were heard in Kyiv as anti-missile defense systems successfully shot down rockets, but debris caused fires on the roofs of buildings and cars, with windows blown out in the aftermath.
Residents in Kyiv described scenes of chaos as debris fell from the sky, with cars bursting into flames and explosions echoing through the city. This latest attack comes after five people were killed in a Russian attack in Kharkiv earlier in the week, and more than 150 individuals were forced to flee the Sumy region due to intensified shelling.
Meanwhile, Russian towns have also been hit by attacks, with 16 people killed and 98 injured in Belgorod. Russian President Putin has issued a warning that Ukrainian strikes on Russia will not go unpunished.
In response to the escalating violence, EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss boosting military and financial aid for Ukraine. They are considering transferring frozen Russian assets to Kyiv to assist in their defense efforts. President Zelensky continues to call for air defense systems to help protect Ukraine from further Russian aggression as tensions between the two countries remain high.
