Google has announced that they are expanding the reach of their AI-powered chatbot, the “Search Generative Experience” (SGE), to more users as part of a Labs experiment.
Initially launched last year, SGE provided generative AI chatbot responses at the top of search results for users who opted in. Now, Google will be rolling out SGE to some users who have not opted in, in order to gather feedback on the feature.
The chatbot will be activated for a subset of queries on a small percentage of search traffic in the US, particularly for searches that are more complex and could benefit from information gathered from various sources. However, it is unclear how the chatbot will be presented on non-opt-in pages, and whether users will have the option to opt out of the feature.
It is important to note that SGE is not compatible with the Firefox browser. Additionally, with the new head of Google Search having previously led the SGE team, it suggests that more AI features may be integrated into Google Search in the future.
Overall, this expansion of the SGE feature demonstrates Google’s commitment to utilizing AI technology to enhance the search experience for users. Stay tuned for any further updates on this exciting development.
