The US Vetoed a Draft Resolution Granting Full UN Membership to Palestine
In a move that has sparked international debate and condemnation, the United States vetoed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council that would have granted the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations. The vote, which saw 12 member states in favor and only two abstentions from the UK and Switzerland, was met with strong reactions from across the globe.
The Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Iran, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Norway, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan all voiced their disappointment and condemnation of the US veto. The Palestinian Authority called the move a “blatant aggression” and pledged to continue their efforts for statehood, while Hamas accused the US of going against the will of the international community and supporting Israel.
Iran criticized Washington’s use of its veto power as “irresponsible”, while Israel applauded the US for vetoing the resolution, labeling it a “shameful proposal”. The US defended its decision by stating that the Palestinian Authority must first make necessary reforms before being considered for statehood.
Russia accused the US of prioritizing Israel’s interests over the suffering of the Palestinian people, while Saudi Arabia, Norway, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan expressed regret over the failure to pass the resolution. The international community remains divided on the issue, with tensions running high as the debate over Palestinian statehood continues to unfold on the global stage.
