Target Facing Backlash for Cutting LGBTQ Merchandise in Stores
Target announced that it will be cutting LGBTQ-themed merchandise from some of its stores during Pride Month in June. The decision comes after the retailer faced backlash and a hit in sales last year for carrying such items.
The company plans to offer the full assortment of LGBTQ merchandise online, but is examining store-level data to determine which physical locations will carry the products. This decision follows incidents of customer-employee confrontations and Pride merchandise being thrown on the floor in stores.
Last year, Target faced criticism for carrying LGBTQ merchandise, with some items from transgender designer Erik Carnell’s Abprallen brand being removed from shelves. This backlash has led to the retailer re-evaluating its in-store offerings.
Reuters reached out to Target for comment on their decision, but the company did not immediately respond. It remains to be seen how this move will be received by the LGBTQ community and allies. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
