In a surprising discovery off the coast of Polperro, Cornwall, a rare blue lobster was caught in a lobster trap by fisherman Chris Puckey. Blue lobsters are an incredibly rare occurrence in the ocean, with the New England Aquarium estimating them to be about one in two million.
The stunning blue lobster, found in southern Cornwall, was described as an extremely rare sea creature with a vivid blue hue. Initially, it was thought to be a genetic mutation suppressing other pigments in the lobster’s shell. The female blue lobster was later secured in a local aquarium by fishmonger Jacqueline Spencer to protect it from being caught again or eaten by another lobster.
If the blue lobster had been sold based on its weight, it could have fetched £25 (about $31). This incredible find comes on the heels of a similar discovery last September, when a rare periwinkle blue lobster was caught in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Additionally, another blue lobster was found in France during the same month, adding to the mystique surrounding these elusive sea creatures.
The community in Cornwall is buzzing with excitement over the rare blue lobster’s capture, with locals marveling at the unique beauty of the ocean’s diverse inhabitants. As more and more of these extraordinary creatures are discovered around the world, it is clear that the ocean still holds many mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
