Tragic Case of Child Abandonment Leads to Life Sentence for Mother
In a heartbreaking case of neglect, Kristel Candelario left her 16-month old daughter, Jailyn, alone in a playpen for 10 days while she went on a summer vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit. Jailyn’s cries were captured on a neighbor’s doorbell camera, but no one came to her rescue. When Candelario returned home, she found her daughter dead, dehydrated, and emaciated.
Candelario pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and child endangering charges. Forensic pathologist Elizabeth Mooney described Jailyn’s excruciating final days, stating that the toddler endured severe suffering from starvation, thirst, and abandonment. As a result, Candelario was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
During the sentencing, the judge admonished Candelario for betraying the sacred bond between a mother and child and leaving Jailyn to perish in confinement. While Candelario’s family blamed her actions on mental health struggles, the judge deemed her actions as the ultimate act of betrayal. Detective T.J. Powell read a poem at the sentencing in memory of Jailyn, emphasizing the injustice of her tragic death.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and prioritizing the welfare of children. The Matzav Blog extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Jailyn, and we hope that justice will be served for this innocent victim.
