Two Adults in Western North Carolina Die from Influenza Complications
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA – In a grim start to the flu season, two adults in Western North Carolina have tragically lost their lives due to complications of influenza. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the deaths, underscoring the severity of the flu virus.
What makes this situation even more concerning is that one of the individuals tested positive for both influenza and COVID-19. This highlights the potential dangers of contracting both viruses simultaneously, as they can pose a significant threat to one’s health.
Dr. Zack Moore, the State Epidemiologist, stressed the importance of taking preventative measures to keep the flu at bay. “Getting your annual flu vaccine, practicing good hand hygiene, and staying home when sick are simple yet effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones,” he said.
The flu is not the only infection making its rounds in the region. Both COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are currently circulating and are also expected to increase in the coming months. To combat these viruses and their potentially severe consequences, vaccinations are strongly recommended.
Vaccinations play a crucial role in preventing serious illnesses, hospitalization, and even death, especially for high-risk individuals such as those aged 65 and older, children under 5, pregnant women, and individuals with certain medical conditions.
To ensure maximum protection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu vaccinations for all individuals aged 6 months and older. Moreover, they offer additional vaccines that are specifically tailored for older adults and pregnant women.
Getting vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 is convenient and accessible. Vaccination services can be availed at various locations, including pharmacies, medical offices, and local health departments.
Apart from vaccinations, individuals should adopt precautionary measures to reduce the risk of infection. This includes regular handwashing, avoiding touching the face, and regularly disinfecting surfaces and objects.
For those who fall ill, it is essential to stay home and take steps to prevent the spread of infection to others within the household.
It is worth noting that it is not possible to distinguish between the flu and COVID-19 based on symptoms alone. Hence, early testing and treatment are pivotal in addressing these infections promptly.
To gather more information on testing and treatment options for COVID-19, individuals should consult reliable sources. Keeping oneself informed and taking appropriate actions can go a long way in safeguarding personal health and the well-being of the community.
