NFL Defends Referee Brad Allen in Controversial Call
In a recent game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, a controversial call made by referee Brad Allen has sparked debates and raised eyebrows among football fans. The call, which wiped away a crucial go-ahead two-point conversion for the Lions, has prompted the NFL to defend Allen in a video sent to all 32 teams.
The controversy stems from whether or not Lions left tackle Taylor Decker properly reported as eligible to receive a pass on the two-point conversion attempt. Decker caught a pass in the end zone, but officials called illegal touching and nullified the conversion.
To shed light on the situation, the league sent a video narrated by senior vice president Walt Anderson. In the footage, Anderson explains that it is the responsibility of the player to clearly communicate their change in status as an eligible receiver to the referee. However, Decker maintains that he verbally reported to the official, and the video even shows him physically reporting.
Referee Brad Allen, on the other hand, stated that it was actually tackle Dan Skipper who had reported as eligible instead of Decker. The video supports this claim, revealing Skipper’s positioning as an eligible player at right tackle, which ultimately resulted in an illegal formation foul committed by the Lions. The league explains that this process is crucial in providing proper notification to the defense when players are lined up in unusual positions.
Despite the explanations offered by the NFL, football fans are unlikely to be satisfied. As a result of the controversial calls made by Allen’s crew in the game, they are expected to face consequences. There is a possibility that the crew will be downgraded and may not receive playoff assignments.
Interestingly, the Cowboys-Lions game also featured another controversial call by Allen’s crew. They erroneously flagged the Cowboys instead of the Lions for a tripping call, adding more fuel to the fire. Going forward, Allen’s calls will inevitably face extra scrutiny in upcoming games, placing additional pressure on both him and his crew.
While controversy is not uncommon in sports, it is the responsibility of the NFL to address these concerns and ensure fair play for all teams involved. As the season progresses, football enthusiasts will undoubtedly keep a close eye on the officiating decisions made by Brad Allen and his crew.
