Iran-Aligned Houthis Claim Responsibility for Attacks on US and Israeli Vessels
The Iran-aligned Houthi armed group has claimed responsibility for a series of recent attacks on US and Israeli vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. The attacks targeted the Maersk Yorktown cargo ship, the Israeli ship MSC Veracruz, and a US warship, spreading fear among international shipping companies.
The US military confirmed the attacks and successfully engaged and destroyed four drones launched by the Houthis over Yemen. The Greek Ministry of National Defence also intercepted two drones launched towards a commercial ship from Yemen, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
These attacks come amidst ongoing fallout from the war on Gaza and the Houthis’ support for the Palestinian armed group Hamas. The group has been targeting vessels since November, claiming to stop Israel’s war on Gaza and reducing the frequency of attacks in recent months. The attacks have forced vessels to bypass the Red Sea and use the Suez Canal, resulting in longer and more expensive journeys for shipping companies.
In response to the attacks, the Western coalition of warships has been mobilized to defend against further threats. The US and UK have conducted air raids on Yemeni soil in retaliation, showing a commitment to protecting international shipping lanes from Houthi aggression.
As tensions continue to rise in the region, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the safety of vessels navigating these important waterways. Stay tuned to Matzav Blog for further updates on this developing story.
