House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, R-Va., has not given his support for a motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. Good criticized the $1.2 trillion federal funding bill recently passed by the House, putting the blame on President Biden and the Democratic Party for the policies funded by the bill.
Despite most Republicans voting against the bill, it narrowly passed and will fund departments such as Defense, Homeland Security, Education, and Health & Human Services. Negotiators from both parties claimed victories in the bill, but House conservatives were upset about the exclusion of border security enforcement measures and the short review timeframe given.
Greene introduced the motion to oust Johnson from leadership, labeling the bill as a “dream and a wish list for Democrats.” However, the motion was not introduced as a “privileged resolution,” so the House is not required to act on it immediately. With Congress on a two-week recess, any progress on the push to remove Johnson will have to wait until lawmakers return to Washington.
In response to the situation, Johnson’s office stated that he remains focused on governance and on pushing conservative legislation to strengthen national defense and expand the majority. It remains to be seen how this internal conflict within the Republican Party will unfold when Congress reconvenes. Stay tuned to Matzav Blog for further updates on this story.
