Google has announced a new feature for its Google Workspace customers that will provide enhanced security and control over their files. The tech giant is introducing the ability to lock Google Drive files, ensuring that no unauthorized changes can be made.
With this new feature, once a file is locked, no one with access to the file will be able to make edits, comments, or suggestions on it. This ensures the integrity and confidentiality of important documents and prevents accidental modifications or unauthorized changes.
The file locking feature operates in read-only mode until the file is unlocked by the user. This provides an added layer of protection and prevents any accidental modifications that can occur during collaboration.
The rollout of this convenient feature for Google Workspace users has already begun for Rapid Release domains. Over the course of the next 15 days, more and more users will have access to this functionality, allowing them to have greater control over their shared files.
For Scheduled Release domains, the file locking feature will be available starting from September 20th. Users in this category will also experience a gradual rollout period of 15 days, ensuring a smooth transition and widespread availability.
Previously, restricting access to files in Google Drive could only be achieved through the Google Drive API or file approval systems. However, with this new update, users will have the flexibility to lock a file at any time directly from the user interface. By simply right-clicking on a file, going to “File Information,” and selecting “Lock,” users can easily secure their files within seconds.
This new addition to Google Workspace is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to compete with other productivity suites, particularly Microsoft. Google has recently introduced various features, such as Duet AI and native eSignature support, to enhance user experience and productivity within its Workspace.
With the ability to lock Google Drive files, Google Workspace customers can now enjoy enhanced security and control over their shared documents. This new feature ensures that valuable files remain unaltered and provides peace of mind when collaborating on important projects.
