Headline: Fears Rise as Fighting Intensifies in Gaza, Leading to Mass Exodus and Breakdown in Public Order
In the midst of escalating violence between Israel and Hamas, concerns regarding a potential breakdown in public order and an exodus of Palestinians into Egypt have emerged. The ongoing conflict has left a large portion of Gaza’s population displaced and unable to seek refuge within the densely populated enclave.
Israel recently launched a ground offensive, pushing into the major city of Khan Younis. Warplanes have also been deployed to attack areas in the western region. Consequently, desperate attacks have been reported on aid trucks, causing high prices and leaving people vulnerable to hunger, cold, and bombardment.
In response to what they term as “the Zionist massacres against civilians,” the armed wing of Hamas is bombarding Tel Aviv. UN officials are warning of an imminent complete breakdown in public order, fearing the potential spread of epidemic diseases and mass displacement into Egypt.
While Israel denies any intention to empty Gaza, they accuse militants of using civilians as human shields. Germany, on the other hand, urges Israel to change tactics in order to protect Palestinian civilians.
In solidarity with the Palestinians, activists are calling for a global strike to exert pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Gaza health ministry has reported 32 Palestinian casualties in Khan Younis since Sunday evening. Fierce fighting is also being reported in various areas including Shejaia, Sheikh Radwan, and Jabalia.
In an effort to protect its citizens, Israel advises individuals in central Gaza to move towards known shelters in the Deir al-Balah area. Medics on the ground have also reported a tragic incident where four people were killed in Rafah due to an Israeli air strike. Israel has temporarily suspended military activities in the Rafah refugee camp citing humanitarian reasons.
The border between Gaza and Egypt is heavily fortified, however, there have been observed attempts to move Palestinians into Egypt. Jordan accuses Israel of attempting to empty Gaza, an accusation which Israel vehemently denies.
Disturbingly, an estimated 18,000 people have been killed and 49,500 injured as a result of Israeli attacks in Gaza. In addition, there are allegations that Hamas is beating people and confiscating aid in Gaza City, further exacerbating the dire situation. Israel has also been accused of preventing aid from entering Gaza.
While calls for a global strike to pressure Israel into a ceasefire continue, it remains unclear if the movement has spread beyond the West Bank. On the other side, the armed wing of Hamas claims to have successfully targeted two Israeli tanks with rockets and launched mortar bombs at Israeli forces.
As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, the international community continues to call for an end to the violence and for both parties to engage in meaningful dialogue and negotiations for a lasting peace.
