Grammy Award-winning Cajun and country artist, Jo-El Sonnier, has tragically passed away at the age of 77. The musician suffered a major heart attack following a stunning performance in Llano, Texas.
Sonnier had just finished a show at the Llano Country Opry, where he had received a standing ovation from an adoring crowd. Despite feeling exhausted, he graciously agreed to perform an encore before taking a moment to rest and sign autographs.
However, tragedy struck when Sonnier suddenly went into cardiac arrest. He was quickly air flown to Austin but, unfortunately, medical professionals were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced deceased.
Born in Rayne, Louisiana, Sonnier’s musical talent was evident from a young age. Throughout his career, spanning several decades, he achieved great success in the 1980s with hit songs such as “No More One More Time” and “Tear Stained Letter.” Sonnier’s versatility as an artist saw him venture into acting and later return to his Cajun roots, earning Grammy nominations for his albums.
In recognition of his contributions to music, Sonnier was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009 and was awarded a Grammy in 2015. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from both friends and fans, who acknowledge his incredible impact on Cajun and country music.
