Intel’s highly anticipated Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” notebook processors were finally launched last week, and the tech community has been buzzing with excitement. One enthusiast, in particular, wasted no time in purchasing an Intel Core Ultra laptop on launch day to conduct Linux benchmarks and review its performance potential.
One of the standout aspects of the Intel Meteor Lake launch was the availability of firm hardware on the very first day. This allowed tech enthusiasts, like our author, to get their hands on the latest processor and put it to the test immediately. For his experiment, the author chose the Acer 14″ Swift Go 14 laptop, which featured the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, 16GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and integrated Arc Graphics.
To truly assess the capabilities of Intel’s new offering, the author decided to compare it against the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor. The Ryzen 7 7840U is an 8-core / 16-thread processor with Radeon 780M integrated graphics, bringing some tough competition to the table.
However, the testing process on the Acer Swift Go 14 was not without its challenges. Linux support and compatibility were not perfect, with unstable graphics until Linux 6.6 and networking problems on Ubuntu 23.10. Nevertheless, the author managed to work around these issues by conducting the tests on Ubuntu 23.10 with the Linux 6.7-rc5 kernel and the latest linux-firmware.git for the best experience.
In this initial article, the author focused on providing a general CPU performance comparison between the Ryzen 7 7840U and the Core Ultra 7 155H. Stay tuned for a follow-up article that will delve into the Arc Graphics performance, as well as more articles on the Meteor Lake NPU performance and a broader Linux laptop performance comparison.
It is worth noting that the review was slightly delayed due to the laptop being purchased as a consumer product rather than being provided as a review sample in advance. However, this did not deter our dedicated author from delivering an insightful and objective analysis of the Intel Core Ultra processor.
Overall, the launch of Intel’s Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” notebook processors has sparked excitement in the tech community. With enthusiasts like our author conducting thorough tests and sharing their experiences, consumers can gain valuable insights into the performance and capabilities of these highly anticipated processors.
