Health experts are urging New Yorkers to steer clear of wildlife following the discovery of cases of bird flu in Marcus Garvey Park in Manhattan. The virus has been detected in various species including wild geese, a peregrine falcon, red-tailed hawk, and even a chicken.
Authorities are advising the public to limit contact with wildlife and ensure proper hand hygiene, especially after any contact with bird droppings. The virus has also been found in 12 flocks of wild birds spanning seven states, with the majority of cases reported in Texas. In addition to wild birds, domestic poultry have also tested positive for the virus.
Despite the concerning findings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that there is currently no evidence of bird flu spreading to humans. In fact, only two people in the US have been infected with the disease in the past two years, both of whom had been in close contact with farm animals, including chickens.
With the recent cases of bird flu, it is crucial for New Yorkers to take necessary precautions when it comes to interacting with wildlife. By following the guidelines set forth by health experts, individuals can help reduce the risk of transmission and keep themselves and their community safe. Stay informed and stay safe.
