Meta, the parent company of popular social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, has recently come under fire for the introduction of AI that cannot be turned off. Wired has reported that explicit ads for AI “girlfriends” are appearing on these platforms, with at least 29,000 such ads found, featuring sex-related messaging.
These ads have been found to violate Meta’s own adult content advertising policy, leading to discrimination against sex workers, sex educators, LGBTQ users, and erotic artists on the platforms. Meanwhile, Meta has allegedly rejected ads for sex toys and period care products while allowing these NSFW AI ads to run.
Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels has stated that the company prohibits these ads and is currently reviewing them to remove any violations. However, despite their efforts, thousands of these explicit AI ads were still active on the platforms days later.
Mashable has reached out to Meta for comment on these findings, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding the company’s advertising policies and the impact on its users. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how Meta will address the concerns raised by Wired and other sources regarding the explicit AI ads on its platforms. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
