Three Buildings Evacuated in Newark After Earthquake Hits East Coast
On Friday, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the East Coast, causing three buildings in Newark to be evacuated due to serious damage. The earthquake, which was felt from Philadelphia to Boston, also shook buildings in New York City and drove residents into the streets.
Aftershocks continued throughout the day, with officials in New York and New Jersey reporting minimal damage and being prepared to handle the situation. Despite the earthquake being the third strongest in the area since 1950, there were no major disruptions reported in the city.
However, the earthquake did expose New York City’s lack of seismic safety in many buildings, with the emergency notification system being criticized for delayed alerts. Some flights were diverted from Newark Liberty International Airport as a precaution.
One unique story to come out of the earthquake was a father-daughter duo visiting the Empire State Building, who experienced the quake firsthand. Despite the unusual experience, the earthquake was ultimately business as usual for most residents in the affected areas.
