San Diegans are in for a celestial treat on April 8, 2024, as a partial solar eclipse will be visible in the region. This rare phenomenon will first darken Mexico before crossing into the U.S., with San Diego County being one of the best places in California to witness the event.
During the eclipse, about 55% of the sun will be obscured, creating a breathtaking visual for onlookers. It is important to note that a total solar eclipse won’t be visible from the contiguous U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044, making this event a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts.
For those unable to view the eclipse in person, NASA will be providing a livestream of the event. However, stargazers in 15 states will have the opportunity to experience the full effect of the eclipse as it begins in Southwest Texas and moves through the U.S.
Residents are reminded to watch the eclipse safely with special glasses to protect their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. Several locations in San Diego County will be hosting free events to view the eclipse, including a viewing party at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.
Additionally, the San Diego Public Library branches will have limited supplies of solar eclipse-viewing glasses available for the public. Eclipses are not only fascinating due to the science involved but also their historical significance, making this upcoming event one not to be missed.
