In a surprising move, pitcher Jordan Montgomery has signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving the New York Yankees empty-handed in their pursuit of the left-hander.
The Yankees had been in talks with Montgomery’s agent before he ultimately decided to go with the Diamondbacks. Negotiations were complicated by the fourth tier of the luxury tax, with the Yankees offering a four-year deal worth $72 million with heavy deferrals. However, the total guarantee was lower than what Montgomery will earn in Arizona.
Montgomery, who was rumored to be seeking a long-term deal, ultimately settled for the one-year contract with the Diamondbacks. With him off the table, the Yankees will have to rely on their current starting rotation, which includes Nestor Cortes, Carlos Rodon, Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil.
Adding to the Yankees’ pitching concerns is ace Gerrit Cole, who is nursing inflammation in his elbow. This injury further highlights the team’s need for strong pitching this upcoming season.
Despite missing out on Montgomery, the Yankees will have to regroup and focus on their current roster as they prepare for the start of the season. Stay tuned to Matzav Blog for more updates on this developing story.
