Get Ready for the Solar Eclipse!
With just over a month to go until the highly anticipated solar eclipse, experts are urging people in West Michigan to start preparing now. Although the region will not be in the path of totality, where the sun is completely blocked by the moon, it will still be a sight to see.
One important aspect of preparing for the eclipse is making sure you have the proper viewing equipment. Eclipse glasses are considered the safest way to view the event, as they block harmful UV rays, infrared light, and 99.999% of visible light. Libraries and museums in West Michigan are helping out by giving away free eclipse glasses to the public.
When choosing glasses, it is important to check for certification from reputable companies such as American Paper Optics, Rainbow Symphony, or Thousand Oaks Optical. It is also recommended to inspect the glasses before use – if any light can be seen coming through, they should be discarded immediately.
To further educate the public on safe viewing methods, Richard Bell, President of the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society, is holding presentations leading up to the eclipse. A full list of presentation dates and locations can be found online for those interested in attending.
So mark your calendars and start preparing for the solar eclipse now. Remember to protect your eyes and enjoy this rare astronomical event in a safe and responsible manner.
