A coalition of A-list actors and activists, including Julianne Moore, Jane Fonda, and Emma Thompson, have joined forces to urge global leaders to prioritize nuclear disarmament in a recent open letter. The letter, signed by stars from both the acting world and the descendants of historical figures like J Robert Oppenheimer, aims to raise awareness about the current nuclear danger facing the world.
The letter highlights the alarming fact that there are currently 13,000 nuclear weapons held by nine countries, some of which are 80 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. This coalition, known as Makes Nukes History, was launched by the Nuclear Threat Initiative and includes a campaign that features billboards and art installations to drive home the message.
Among those who have signed the letter are descendants of J Robert Oppenheimer, whose legacy has been heavily tied to the creation of nuclear weapons. Charles Oppenheimer, grandson of the renowned physicist, is joined by actors from the film about Oppenheimer, such as Tony Goldwyn and Matthew Modine.
As the Oscars approach this weekend, the campaign plans to draw attention to the ongoing nuclear threat by displaying around 1,000 posters across Los Angeles. Ernest J Moniz, CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative and former secretary of energy, stressed the importance of heeding Robert Oppenheimer’s warnings about the development of powerful weapons and arms races.
This star-studded coalition is hoping to make a significant impact and bring the pressing issue of nuclear disarmament to the forefront of global discussions. With the support of influential figures and a creative campaign strategy, they aim to spark change and work towards a safer, nuclear-free world.
