United Launch Alliance’s highly anticipated debut of the Vulcan rocket may face a delay, pushing the launch from late December to early January, according to CEO Tory Bruno. The news comes after a recent Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) test highlighted a few ground issues towards the end.
Originally scheduled for December 24, the launch is now “likely out,” as stated by Bruno. In response to the issues encountered during the WDR test, ground teams are diligently working on scheduling another test, potentially as early as Tuesday.
The primary payload onboard the Vulcan rocket is Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander, which is set to embark on a historic journey to the Moon. However, if the launch occurs in December, the lander will be touching down on the lunar surface on January 25.
Complicating matters further is the fact that the next launch window for Peregrine’s needs opens on January 8, potentially overlapping with other missions bound for the Moon. This includes the Nova-C lander carried by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and JAXA’s Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM).
The delay in Vulcan’s debut launch is a disappointment for space enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next generation rocket’s maiden voyage. However, the postponement emphasizes United Launch Alliance’s commitment to ensuring a successful and error-free mission.
The Vulcan rocket represents a significant advancement in space exploration technology, featuring reusable engines and an innovative design to enhance efficiency and performance. This launch holds particular significance as it marks the first time the private sector will touch down on the Moon.
United Launch Alliance and its partners, including Astrobotic, are determined to overcome any obstacles that may arise during the testing phase. Their dedication to delivering cutting-edge space missions showcases the continuous progress and innovation within the industry. Ultimately, the delay may prove to be a necessary measure to ensure the success of the mission and the safety of the involved spacecraft.
