British actor Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Lex Luthor in the highly anticipated upcoming film from director James Gunn. The decision to cast Hoult came after the studio decided to go through the casting process following the SAG-AFTRA strike. Warner Bros. already has a working relationship with Hoult, as he previously starred in Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2 and also appeared in Mad Max Fury Road.
Joining Hoult in the cast is Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría, who has been chosen to play the villainous character known as The Engineer. This exciting casting news adds more anticipation to the film, as Hoult joins the ranks of acclaimed actors such as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg, who have all previously portrayed Luthor in the Superman franchise.
Gunn, known for his successful direction of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has also made other significant casting decisions for the project. After extensive auditions and screen tests, he selected David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan to play the main leads in the film. Superman: Legacy, based on DC characters and directed by Gunn, is scheduled for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025.
The announcement of this project earlier this year was part of Gunn and producer Peter Safran’s plan to revamp the DC slate. Their vision for the franchise has sparked excitement among fans, who are eager to see how Gunn will bring his unique storytelling style to the iconic superhero.
Although Warner Bros. has not commented on the recent casting news, it is clear that they are putting their trust in Hoult’s talent and the choices made by Gunn. Hoult is represented by UTA, 42, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern, showcasing his promising career trajectory.
As the release date approaches, fans of the Superman franchise and movie enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting further updates on Superman: Legacy. With the addition of Hoult and de Faría to the cast, the film promises to bring a fresh and captivating take on the beloved superhero story.
