Negotiations set to resume between SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood studios
Negotiations between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Hollywood studios are expected to resume this week following a call between Disney CEO Bob Iger and SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is anticipated to present a new package of proposals during the negotiations, in an effort to address the concerns raised by the actors’ union.
Frustration grows among A-list actors
A group of A-list actors, including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, and George Clooney, grew frustrated with the slow progress of the negotiations and recently held Zoom meetings with SAG-AFTRA leaders to push for a resolution. These actors, known for their influential presence in the industry, voiced their concerns and proposed a new model for streaming residuals that aims to benefit lower-paid actors. They also suggested eliminating the dues cap on high-earning members, in an effort to create a more equitable system.
Controversial negotiating styles captured attention
Prior to the negotiations breaking off, negotiator Fran Drescher’s unique style reportedly alarmed the CEOs in attendance. Drescher’s method involved bringing a doll and using Buddhist quotes during discussions, which some found unconventional. Despite the differing approaches, the A-list actors remained focused on their proposal for streaming residuals.
A plea for a return to negotiations
The frustrated actors also reached out to their studio contacts, urging a return to negotiations. The studios are now motivated to salvage the upcoming 2024 movie and broadcast season, as well as restore the countless industry jobs that have been put on hold due to the ongoing negotiations.
SAG-AFTRA stands firm on streaming fees
SAG-AFTRA remains steadfast in their position, not backing down from their proposal to charge streaming platforms a fee on every global subscriber. The outcome of these negotiations is of great importance to guild members and the entire industry, as they eagerly await the resolution that will shape the future of streaming residuals and membership dues.
As talks resume, both sides are hopeful for a resolution that will not only address the concerns of the A-list actors but also ensure the stability and prosperity of the industry as a whole. The fate of the 2024 movie and broadcast season, as well as the restoration of jobs, hang in the balance as negotiations continue.
