Dr. Frank Rubio Returns to Earth After Record-Breaking Space Mission
Dr. Frank Rubio, the first American astronaut to spend over a year continuously in space, has successfully returned to Earth after an incredible 371 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The duration of Rubio’s trip, which was more than twice as long as originally scheduled, set a new record, surpassing the previous records held by astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Scott Kelly.
Rubio’s return to Earth was not without its challenges. Alongside Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, Rubio landed in Kazakhstan on September 27. Due to their extended stay in microgravity, the astronauts had to be carried away.
Originally arriving at the ISS in September 2022, Rubio and his team had to stay in space longer than planned after their spacecraft suffered severe damage from space debris. This damage caused an uncontrollable radiator leak, posing a threat to their safety.
However, Rubio’s extended stay in space has provided invaluable insights into long-duration space missions, contributing significantly to future exploration efforts. His mission extended the previous record for an American astronaut’s spaceflight, previously set by Vande Hei, who spent a commendable 355 consecutive days on the ISS.
Although Rubio’s achievement falls short of the longest-ever consecutive time spent in space, which stands at 437 days by cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov, it remains a significant milestone in space exploration.
Throughout his mission, Rubio accomplished a series of remarkable feats. He completed approximately 5,936 orbits of Earth, undertook three spacewalks, and collaborated with 28 different crewmates on the ISS. Additionally, he conducted various scientific experiments, including studying bacteria behavior in microgravity and successfully growing a tomato plant in space.
However, after spending an extended period in space, adjusting to life back on Earth may prove challenging for Rubio. Prolonged time in microgravity can result in muscle degeneration, bone loss, reduced eyesight, impaired balance, and changes in brain structure. Rubio anticipates that it could take anywhere from two to six months for him to feel completely normal again after his impressive first spaceflight.
Dr. Frank Rubio’s remarkable accomplishment serves as a testament to humankind’s unwavering curiosity and determination in exploring the vast expanse of space. As technology continues to advance, doors to further discoveries and longer space missions are opened, offering the potential to unravel the mysteries that lie beyond our planet.
