Italian luxury brand Gucci took the stage at Milan Fashion Week with its new designer, Sabato de Sarno, unveiling his debut collection titled “Gucci Ancora.” The show, however, faced a last-minute setback as the venue had to be changed due to unexpected rain. Less than 24 hours before the catwalk, the show was moved back to the Gucci Hub, ensuring a smooth and stylish presentation.
Drawing on his previous experience at prestigious fashion houses such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Valentino, de Sarno brought a fresh perspective to Gucci, reinventing the brand’s iconic codes. His vision was noticeably more stripped-back compared to his predecessor, Alessandro Michele.
The collection featured an array of stunning pieces, including tailored short suits, patent babydoll dresses, and metallic fringed skirts. Showcasing Gucci’s signature red and green webbing, de Sarno also reinvented the Bamboo and Jackie bags, giving them a modern twist. The dominant color of the collection was oxblood red, a hue inspired by the historic Savoy hotel in London, where Guccio Gucci started his career in the late 1800s.
One of the standout highlights of the collection was the platform loafers adorned with the iconic horsebit, adding an element of sophistication to the ensembles. De Sarno described his collection as a narrative of desirable objects that can enrich everyday life, capturing the essence of Gucci’s style.
Appointed by Gucci owner Kering in January, de Sarno wasted no time in introducing his unique aesthetic to the brand. Prior to the show, a teaser campaign featuring supermodel Daria Werbowy was released, generating excitement among fashion enthusiasts.
In terms of inspiration, de Sarno looked to the Marina jewelry collection and explored embroideries found within Gucci’s extensive archive. The result was a highly shoppable wardrobe that appealed to Gucci fans spanning various decades.
Gucci’s new designer has undoubtedly made his mark with his debut collection, showcasing his talent and expertise. As the fashion world eagerly awaits future creations from Sabato de Sarno, it is clear that Gucci continues to pioneer innovative designs while staying true to its heritage and timeless allure.
